Story

THE FAMILY

Taking a “hands-on” approach to winemaking since 1998, the McLachlan family strives to produce wines that embody the absolute best of Central Otago. Passion for the land and sustainability of the local environment runs through the family and is a hallmark of Peregrine as a business, which operates its vineyards and winery organically. These passionate family wine producers have a philosophy of producing wine that is truly representative of the Central Otago region, drawing only the very best hand-picked fruit from their three estate-owned vineyards and a select number of grower sites in the Pisa, Bendigo, and Gibbston sub-regions.

THE TERROIR

At a latitude of 45°S, the Peregrine Winery and its vineyards are located in the southernmost grape-growing region in the world, Central Otago, in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. By way of comparison, Burgundy and Oregon straddle the 45th parallel north. It is New Zealand’s only inland and elevated wine-growing region, with vineyards nestled in breathtaking river valleys and clinging to snow-capped mountainsides. It is an area frequently described as “heaven on earth” and is home to the New Zealand falcon and home to Peregrine Wines.

CONSERVATION

The Peregrine wines are named in honor of New Zealand’s endemic falcon (Karearea in Maori), a bird without rival or fear. Once on the verge of extinction, the Karearea is slowly making a comeback as the avian ruler of the New Zealand skies. Peregrine Wines is proud to be a major sponsor of the Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust in New Zealand, a breeding and rehabilitation project ensuring these majestic and proud birds have a guaranteed place in our pristine and breathtaking landscape.

THE WINERY

Peregrine is known not only for its wines, but also for its architecturally award-winning winery, which was completed in 2003. In 2004, the architect won the UK-based AR+D Emerging Architecture award in London for the Peregrine Winery building and received the Supreme New Zealand Architecture award from the NZ Institute of Architects in 2005. Additionally, the New York Post has placed Peregrine in its list of the top five wineries to visit in the world.

THE WINES

A boutique artisanal producer, Peregrine offers a premium range of wines with a focus on Pinot Noir and a variety of aromatic white wines. It is a brand that has, since its first vintage in 1998, gained a reputation both domestically and internationally as one of New Zealand’s iconic wine brands, with numerous international and domestic trophies, medals, and accolades that fully justify this status. Starting with the 2017 vintage, Peregrine wines have been made only with organic grapes as certified by BioGro New Zealand, and the winery has also been recognized as sustainable by New Zealand Sustainable Winegrowing.
