HISTORY & FAMILY
The Sattler family has been in the wine business in the village of Gamlitz, Austria, since the late 1880s. The family has a long tradition of quality and innovation. In the 1960s, Wilhelm Sattler Senior, with his wife Aloisia, laid the foundation for the success of Styrian wine with the introduction, for the first time in the region, of dry, unadulterated wines, dedicated to their origin and without residual sugar, acidification, or intervention. Today the two Sattler brothers, Willi and Hannes, are leading the estate with the new generation by their side. Hannes Sattler is the Chef at the estate’s restaurant, which carries three Gault Millau toques. This culinary interpretation of the family’s quality philosophy was the region’s first gourmet restaurant and has been setting benchmarks since its opening in 1990. Willi Sattler and his wife Maria have continued the family tradition at the winery Sattlerhof. With innovations like the conversion to organic cultivation and the soft pruning method, they strive continuously to refine the production of expressive wines from their old vineyards. Their sons Alexander and Andreas have also discovered their passion for making wine. They contribute with their experience and ideas and are the link that carries the family traditions into the future. Andreas has taken over the winemaking since 2015, and Alexander has founded a great passion for taking care of the vineyards and implemented Biodynamic farming at the estate. Together they introduced spontaneous fermentation and lower-intervention cellar work. Willi Sattler is the current family member in charge and has grown the estate to 40 hectares (99 acres) of organically farmed vines in some of the region’s most famous vineyards, including “grand crus” Kranachberg and Pfarrweingarten. Sattlerhof belongs to the prestigious STK (Styrian Terroir and Classic Winegrowers), an association with strict quality standards and an esteemed vineyard classification.
ORGANIC PRACTICES
The family places great value on working closely with nature to produce their wines, caring for sustainable soil management and longevity of the vines; their vineyards are a complex, balanced habitat, and the preservation of biodiversity is a central focus. Since the 2016 vintage, the wines have carried the green seal of organic certification and became certified Biodynamic in 2021. Because their high-quality standards can only be achieved through stringent yield reductions, meticulous manual labor, and selective handpicking in small crates, each team member is extremely important. Each bottle is handled with great care and bares an ‘estate bottling’ inscription and an organic BIO certification seal.
