Story

The sites in Castell's homeland, the Steigerwald, are characterised by the Gipskeuper – the somewhat "different" Franconian TRIASSIC terroir, named after the era in which this sequence of red sandstone, shell limestone and Keuper was created. Our Gipskeuper, which can only be found in the far east of the Franconian wine-growing region, is extraordinary and rich in minerals, which has a positive influence on our Castell wine style. Paired with the Castell vineyards, the Gipskeuper gives our wines a characteristic that we are appreciating more and more: great longevity. Our wine philosophy is based on it today. It is our motivation and incentive not to stand still, but to constantly develop and give our wines the necessary time to develop to their full greatness. Long-term and nature-oriented thinking as well as the creation of synergies is a top priority for our family. Forestry also plays a central role here, which we have been doing for a similar amount of time as viticulture and where climate change presents us with equally great challenges. Our oaks grow in our forests around Castell on the same terroir as our vines. The fine-pored structure of the woods, from which we have our wooden barrels built according to old craftsmanship in the region, perfectly supports the slow maturation of our wines. Winery and forestry combine nature-oriented, long-term thinking and thus the orientation towards a sustainable future.
