Story
THE HISTORY
The story began with Gino Umani Ronchi in Cupramontana, the heart of Verdicchio Classico, more than half a century ago. Today the Umani Ronchi wine estate is owned by the Bianchi-Bernetti family, who since 1959 have been making superb quality craft wines, coaxing the best out of Verdicchio and Montepulciano, two varietals that find their finest expression in Marche and Abruzzo. The winery is managed by Michele Bernetti, who combines his leadership and technical role with international market development. By his side, his father Massimo Bernetti serves as the President of Umani Ronchi.
THE VINEYARDS & GREEN FARMING
Today, Umani Ronchi includes a total surface of 520 acres spread between the hills and the sea along the Adriatic coast. The 115 miles of rows are distributed across ten districts, each with its own vocation and terroir. Umani Ronchi has doubled its estate and replanted 85% of its old vines since the 1970s, investing in Verdicchio and Rosso Conero, as well as extending its interest to other varieties such as Pecorino. Umani Ronchi is driven by a strong sense of ethics and respect for the environment, lavishing attention on the territory and biodiversity, with each choice reflecting a sustainable way of thinking and acting. All the vineyards, from the Verdicchio to the Montepulciano, are farmed organically. Even more than an ideological conviction, organic farming is a practical, technical choice for Umani Ronchi. Organic farming requires balance in nature and a range of crops, trees, and herbs that creates a biodiverse environment. The Roseto degli Abruzzi and Montipagano vineyards in Abruzzo have been farmed organically since they were first planted and are the source of the Montipagano and Centovie wines. In Marche, they produce Casal di Serra and Vecchie Vigne, two organic wines from Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.
THE WINES
The character of the wines reflects the company’s personality and guiding principles, while also expressing the specificity of vineyards located in the different districts of Marche and Abruzzo. Umani Ronchi has always valued every single vineyard, supporting their potential and respecting each climatic peculiarity. At the same time, there is continuous refinement of the whole range of wines, resulting in a “winery style” characterized by delicacy and elegance. Umani Ronchi produces “grandi vini, non grossi vini”, meaning that they make great wines, not big, overpowering ones.
